Counseling for Depression

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. -Psalm 23:4

Sadness, heaviness, and despair can come uninvited, and they don’t always leave when we say a prayer. You might feel like you’re going through the motions of life without joy. You might feel like you're underwater while everyone else is breathing. And if you’ve ever thought, “Shouldn’t my faith be enough?”, you’re not the only one.

At Grace and Nature Group, we hold space for the deep sorrow that sometimes accompanies the human experience. We also believe that healing is not only possible, it is part of God’s generous plan for your wholeness.

Depression is Not a Moral Failure

The Church does not condemn the weary. She holds them close.

Saints like St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Benedict Joseph Labre, and St. John of the Cross faced profound emotional and spiritual darkness. Even Mother Teresa, in letters discovered after her death, described long periods of interior desolation. And yet — they remained faithful. Not because they felt good, but because they trusted the One who is Good.

“The test of a good religion,” Chesterton quipped, “is whether you can joke about it.” But perhaps just as telling is this: a good religion must also give you room to weep in it, and still belong.

Depression is not a sin. It’s not a punishment. It is a real experience that can affect your thoughts, your body, and yes, your soul. But grace meets us there too, not to scold, but to lift.

Grace and Nature: An Integrated Approach

Therapy and faith are not opposed. In fact, they often help illuminate each other. While the sacraments and spiritual direction tend the soul, therapy can tend the mind and heart,  often revealing places where God is already moving.

At Grace and Nature Group, our approach to depression:

  • Honors the truth of your inherent dignity

  • Uses clinically grounded, evidence-based tools to guide healing

  • Is rooted in the belief that you are never abandoned by God

What Counseling Can Offer

Healing doesn’t always arrive in grand gestures. Often, it comes slowly — like light through stained glass: filtered, colored, and beautiful in its own way.

Counseling can help you:

  • Understand the emotional, relational, and spiritual roots of depression

  • Build habits of hope and practical coping strategies

  • Find words for your suffering — and space to be heard

  • Reconnect with God without shame or fear

  • Experience compassion, not correction

You were made for joy, not forced happiness, but deep in the soul joy. And though it may feel far away now, it’s not gone forever.

We would be honored to walk with you toward the light.
